Indhold: This course will use a lecture and discussion format to present an introduction to the cultural, political and economic landscape of past and present Southeast Asia. This will cover the countries of Burma (Myanmar), Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, the Philippines and East Timor. With this background, we will look at the region’s diverse modes of livelihoods, forms of family and kinship systems as well as the different kinds of societies. The goals of the course are to help students become aware of this region and in particular to gain an appreciation for its great diversity. This course will provide the foundation for more advanced modules on specific issues in the subsequent years of study. Students are expected to actively participate in class.
