Indhold: |
This candidate course focuses on experimental methods and research models used to study and treat common chronic diseases. Lectures from experts in various disciplines will expose students to practical experimental models and methods currently applied to study the underlying mechanisms involved in altered physiological function in various disease states. Students will learn about various laboratory research approaches from the level of the molecule-to-system including animal and human experiments undertaken to advance our understanding of pathophysiological processes on a variety of topics. Students will also gain practical experience in formulating and constructing a formal research grant proposal on a specific topic based on a review of the literature and development of a research study plan. The specific aims of the course will be for students to 1) learn current experimental models applied to study disease pathogenesis and altered physiologic function, 2) develop critical reading skills on current study models, 3) construct a fundable research proposal based on relevant background literature, including study aims, experimental design, hypotheses and expected outcomes. |
Lærebøger: |
Students should refer to the listed papers related to each topical lecture posted on the Absalon and SIS websites in preparation for each lecture. For further background reading on relevant topics in pathophysiology we recommend that students access the following text:
Robbins and Cotran; Pathophysiological Basis of Disease, 7th Edition. Kumar, Abbas, Fausto Eds. 2005.
|
Faglige forudsætninger: |
Open to Master’s students in Molecular Biomedicine and from the Faculty of Natural Sciences who have completed their bachelor studies. Students with similar competencies may be allowed admission (decided by the course leaders). |
Eksamensform: |
All students are expected to attend all scheduled lectures. Students will be evaluated by the course leaders on 1) the quality of the content and oral presentation skills during an open lecture to the class on their proposed research study, 2) the quality of their written research proposal evaluated by the course leaders and censor.
Oral Presentation = 40%
Written Research Proposal = 60%
