Vis skema for kurset Samlet oversigt over tid og sted for alle kurser inden for Lektionsplan for Det Naturvidenskabelige Fakultet Forår 2013 NAT |
Undervisnings- form: |
This theoretical course will consist mainly of lectures, theoretical exercises on the biophysical techniques above, reading and discussion of original literature. |
Indhold: |
The course aims to give a solid introduction to the techniques used to investigate properties of proteins, their structure, function and dynamics. A special emphasis will be made on the methods that make use of large research infrastructurs like synchrotrons and neutron facilities. This includes X-ray diffraction from crystals and in solution, different spectroscopic methods as well as biochemical and bioinformatics methods. The focus will be on the application to problems in protein science, with enough theory for the students to relate critically to the techniques. Examples of the problems that can be tackled with these biophysical techniques are establishment of enzymatic reaction mechanisms, understanding of the causes of protein aggregation, protein folding and protein interactions with small molecules and other proteins. The students will be expected to independently read original literature on the application of the techniques, which will be discussed in the classes. |
Målbeskrivelse: |
In order to get the grade 12 the students must be able to:
describe and critically relate to the principles of the biophysical and biochemical techniques used to investigate protein structure and function
solve theoretical and numerical problems related to the techniques
independently and critically evaluate and present results from original literature where these techniques are applied to concrete problems
competently discuss the result obtained from these techniques orally and in writing using precise language |

Tilmelding: |
Via KUnet i perioden 1.-10. december. |
Faglige forudsætninger: |
A knowledge of protein chemistry and protein structure. If the major subject module ”Protein structure and function” is taken at the same time, this will provide some of the background in protein structure, but a basic knowledge of protein chemistry is expected prior to the course. |
Eksamensform: |
Continous evaluation through written assignments (problems) throughout the course (1/3 of the mark) and one final essay where the students will have to describe how they would apply the techniques they have learnt to a concrete problem (2/3 of the mark). External censorship and marks according to the 7-step-scale. Re-examination: As the ordinary examination. |
