| Undervisnings- periode: |
Uge 36-44 |
| Undervisnings- form: |
The course is built as a composite of lectures and practicals. Practicals usually adhere strongly to the topics covered in the lectures, and it is stressed here that participation in both are essential. |
| Indhold: |
Application of principles of chemistry to explain the mechanisms regulating the workings – past and present-of the major geological geochemical systems such as the Earth´s mantle, its crust, its oceans and its atmosphere |
| Kompetence- beskrivelse: |
Focus is on modern tools to investigate the Earth´s system, that are trace element and isotope geochemistry, applied to processes dealing with the formation of the Earth and the Solar System, to core formation, to mantle differentiation, to crust formation and to changes in the atmosphere and hydrosphere with impact on paleoclimatic changes. Emphasis is on the understanding of basic thermodynamics and kinetics of some modern tracer systems, and its integration to particular important processes governing the meachnisms in the “deep” Earth and at the surface of the Earth today and in Earth´s long-lasting history. In addition to using elements and their isotopes as potential tracers, radioactive tracers are used for geochronological purposes. It is the meaning that this course also provides an overview on high-temperature dating methods applied to Earth system processes. The course, very subordinately theoretical, focuses mostly on up-to-date, modern methods commonly applied in geochemical research of the Earth systems, and therefore provides practical toolkits for students that work themselves into the field of high-temperature geochemical applications to Earth´s processes. |
| Målbeskrivelse: |
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
apply trace element and isotope geochemistry to processes dealing with the formation of the Earth and the Solar System, to core formation and mantle differentiation, to crust formation and to changes in the atmosphere and hydrosphere;
account for the basic thermodynamics and kinetics of some modern chemical tracer systems;
use elements and their isotopes as potential tracers, and radioactive tracers for geochronological purposes;
account for the up-to-date, modern methods commonly applied in geochemical research of the Earth systems.
