Module I-VI, KA, course 8:
Cristiano Zanetti: The Renaissance: from Burckhardt to Burke
The main aim of this course is to give to students a general knowledge about the highly problematic concept of Renaissance, according to different lenses that scholars have been using to investigate it since the 19th century. This trajectory will provide them with an analytical lattice updated to recent historiographic issues. Practical examples of source analyses will take place during the course. Sources will be both written (narrative and administrative) and material ones (paintings, sculptures, architecture and scientific objects). The analytic tools used in the class will enable the students to address questions to a local level (Danish and Scandinavian), in the framework of the relation between the so-called Italian Renaissance and Europe, a lively current academic discussion.
The course will be divided in two weekly classes of two hours. Each class will be split in a lecture (ca. 40 min.), a presentation of the readings followed by a discussion (ca. 40 min.). The remaining time will be devoted to a workshop (practical reading of the sources and the abovementioned project about the Danish Renaissance). The last class will be peripatetic: the Renaissance in museums and urban landscape.
