The period of Kassite rule was characterized by far-reaching diplomatic and economic relationships, relative internal stability, and considerable military might. This course is an investigation of Babylonia and the Kassite monarchy during the Late Bronze Age (c. 1500-1000 B.C.). It will consider the formation, dissolution, and characteristics of the Kassite state, the economic and diplomatic role of Babylonia in the Near East, patterns of Babylonian settlement, and the demographics of one Babylonian population, among other things. Class preparation will consist of readings and analysis of articles, settlement surveys, archaeological site reports, and a selection of Mesopotamian texts translated into English; |
