This course describes the language behaviors and practices of young people in late modern Europe, particularly metropolitan areas. We will look at the interplay between ideology, social power, and culture as it can be observed in youth groups. The course will cover basic sociolinguistics as well as post-colonial theories of language. The course will further look at empirical studies of youth interaction from European cities.
The course will consist of 22 double lessons based on lectures, student presentations, and discussions. The students will be expected to turn in small written contributions. The course counts for 15 ECTS.
Course level
This course is offered as a degree course for University of Copenhagen kandidat students of Danish and linguistics (in the overbygning), and in addition the course is offered as an elective course for University of Copenhagen students (BA tilvalgsfag), as well as an open course for international students.
