Painting in Florence and Tuscany: 1300-1500 will examine paintings in different media by Giotto, Masaccio, Fra Angelico, Fra Filippo Lippi, Leonardo da Vinci, etc., intended for diverse settings, such as churches and domestic interiors. The course will analyze the works from a variety of methodological perspectives and discuss factors that influenced the choice of subject matter and style of the paintings, including the teachings of different religious orders, ideas about government and civic responsibility, humanism, science, etc. The changing purposes of art and the role of the artist in society will also be examined. |
