Indhold: This course introduces students to a global and transnational perspective on social transformations in South Asia. It will familiarize students with the methodological search for ways of understanding social change that are sensitive to both the concrete transnational flows of products, ideas, technologies, and people as they impact local settings and indeed shape “the local”; as well as to the more abstract historical logics of global capital accumulation and hegemony that delimit the political and social possibilities available to local communities. It engages with the shifting methodological perspectives developing in social science on the “local” in relation to the “global”, connecting these to an understanding of the empirical events and movements that have prompted these new views. Taking South Asia as its point of departure, the course will offer general insights into the literature on transnational flows and processes affecting as well as emanating from the region -- and extending beyond it.
Målbeskrivelse: Students will be able to summarize the strengths and problems of a range of methodological and theoretical perspectives, from the notion of global “flows” and “scapes”, to the effort to study “place-making” rather than places, a focus on the “frictions” that “travelling models” produce, the idea of transnational (dis)connections, and the idea of polarization in “global systems”. Students will be able to use these various perspectives to discuss concrete social phenomena in South Asia today, such as the way cities are transforming, the changing patterns of impoverishment and accumulation in the region, the modern reproduction of (traditional) inequalities, the politics of indigenism and the ethnicization of politics, transnational activism and its limits, and NGO-ization in relation to neoliberalism. In doing so, students will also be able to indicate how concrete instances of transnational influence and global restructuring in South Asian can help assess, interrogate, and problematize general theories and thereby contribute to exploring similar processes in different regions.
