Animal Diversity – Invertebrates - AFLYST

Semesterangivelse: Forårs kursus Kurset udbydes i blok 3

Udgave: Forår 2013 NAT
ECTS points: 10
Blokstruktur: 3. blok
Fagområde: bio
Institutter: Natural History Museum of Denmark
Uddannelsesdel: Kandidat niveau
Kontaktpersoner: Danny Eibye-Jacobsen, Natural History Museum of Denmark, University of Copenhagen. Tel. (+45) 3532 1115, e-mail: dejacobsen@snm.ku.dk
Andre undervisere: Reinhardt Møbjerg Kristensen, Jørgen Olesen, Martin Vinther Sørensen, Niels Peder Kristensen, Thomas Pape, Lars Vilhelmsen, Alexey Solodovnikov, Henrik Enghoff (all Natural History Museum of Denmark, University of Copenhagen); Jens Høeg, Anders Lydik Garm, Katrine Worsaae (all Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen)
Undervisnings- form: The course will be provided within an e-learning platform, which will allow students to contact the teachers responsible for specific contributions. Furthermore, each student will have an assigned supervisor from his/her own university.
Formål: The aim of the course is to provide students with a relatively detailed overview of the morphology, biology and diversity of all metazoan clades, except Vertebrata, in an evolutionary framework. Groups that are either highly diverse (in morphological terms) or are perceived to be of fundamental phylogenetic importance will be treated in greatest detail.
Kompetence- beskrivelse: After completion of the course the student is expected to:
Knowledge and Understanding
• demonstrate knowledge of the structural and functional diversity found in the animal kingdom
• show an understanding of the developmental biology of major clades in Metazoa
• show an understanding of current hypotheses on the subdivision of Metazoa into major clades, including the characters they are defined by and the morphological, fossil and molecular evidence that supports them
Skills and Abilities
• recognize members of most animal phyla
• describe the general morphology and anatomy of members of selected phyla
• provide examples of evolutionary convergence and homology
Judgement and Approach
• be able to critically evaluate the principles used to define major clades (phyla and above) within Metazoa
Lærebøger: The main textbooks will be the most recent editions of Ruppert, Fox & Barnes (Invertebrate Zoology, Thomson Learning) and Gullan & Cranston (The Insects: an outline of Entomology, Wiley Blackwell), supplemented by resources provided by the teachers within the e-learning platform. A reading list for both textbooks will be provided.
Tilmelding: Via KUnet between November 15 and December 1.
Eksamensform: Each lesson will be accompanied by a short list of questions, most of them multiple choice; the student will submit his/her answers to the teacher indicated for that lesson. After the final lesson, a more encompassing written online examination will be administered by the teacher responsible for the course (duration: 3 hours). This examination will include 3 short essay questions. Internal censorship, grading according to the 7-step grading scale. Re-exam: Similar to ordinary exam.
