Indhold: Why is the contemporary project of state-building so difficult? This course aims to build an understanding of the relatiomship between state and non-state forms of governance/authority in Africa, scrutinizing both the "official" structures of governance i.e. national states, regional and pan-African cooperation organisations and the "informal/unofficial" forms of authority which coexist in a dynamic way with these.

The course looks into the historiographic origins of the independent African national states and the attempts to conceptualize African statehood - with a focus on the challenges that African statehood has posed to traditional international relations theories and euro-centric definitions of state. In the context of the post-cold War globalization and liberalization of African societies, the course looks at the proliferation of trans-national and sub-national forms of social order which often reduce formal state structures to "simulated government" (Comaroff and Comaroff).

In addition, we will look at the manifestations of the the political dream of regional and pan-African cooperation exemplified in the regional cooperation organisations and the African Union.
