Undervisnings- form: The course will consist of a combination of lectures, discussions, minor group work and student presentations
Formål: By the end of the course, students: 1. Will have familiarized themselves with key themes of newer political anthropology; 2. Should be able to understand the ethical implications of different theoretical frameworks for studying the political; 3. Should demonstrate an understanding of anthropology's contribution to analyses of the political; 4. Can critically discuss central concepts and concepts within the field of political anthropology.
Indhold: Critical Political Anthropology proposes to focus on newer trends within political anthropology and particularly those that aim at continuing anthropology's critical project of understanding relationships between power, subjectivity and globalizing forces. We will look at the role of the state, neoliberal governance and new forms of dispossession but also on protest and the multiplication of responses to the current global crisis – through the alter-globalization movement, the rise of social and solidarity economies as well as the resurfacing of political revolutions. How do we theorize the interplay between different scales of sociality and what constitutes the specific anthropological contribution to forms and processes of inequality and subject-formation? The course seeks to address three themes: 1. What constitutes important sites for political anthropologists to study? 2. Which analytical optics help us interrogate the political on the ethnographic level where anthropologists work? 3. How can and do anthropologists contribute to a critical perspective on society and what are the ethical implications of engaged knowledge?
