Undervisnings- form: The course will consist of a combination of lectures, discussions, minor group work and student presentations
Indhold: This course will present how some of the main anthropological theories have conceptualized the relationship between man and its environment. It will deal separately with cultural deterministic theories and natural-deterministic theories, and it will also present recent theories of environmental anthropology which have tried to bridge the dichotomy between nature and culture. It will then discuss the relevance of these theories for contemporary debates on the management of natural resources, and analyze how they have been used to legitimize different environmental discourses. This analysis will be based on various case studies from all over the world, presenting different systems of natural resource management, environmental perceptions and values, and local knowledge.
Målbeskrivelse: At the end of this course, students will be able to • Summarize how the main anthropological theories have conceptualized the relationship between human beings and their environments or between nature and culture • Reflect critically on how these theories have been used to legitimize different environmental discourses • Analyse concrete environmental projects and identitfy the theories and arguments on which they build
