Undervisnings- form: Course form: Two weekly three-hour colloqvium sessions, where both lectures and student presentations will be the form of work. The student presentations will be carried out on the basis of handed out material. Guest lectures will appear in several of the sessions.
Formål: The aim is to explore the theoretical foundations of mediasociologi from a present day perspective. Do the changes in the social formation concerning technology, social institutions and media organizations require a new way of thinking about the culture and the shaping of identity? Focus will be on changes in the relationship between the Public and Private sphere, the concept of Ideology, its origins - and if it is still a viable option when analysing social domination within the media.
Indhold: CONTENTS:
The aim is to explore the theoretical foundations of mediasociologi from a present day perspective. Do the changes in the social formation concerning technology, social institutions and media organizations require a new way of thinking about the culture and the shaping of identity? Focus will be on changes in the relationship between the Public and Private sphere, the concept of Ideology, its origins - and if it is still a viable option when analysing social domination within the media. The main classical and new approaches will be examined and discussed. on the basis of original literature: Marx , Adorno, Gramsci, Habermas, McLuhan, Kellner and others The concept of the course stems from a wish to analyze the media form a critical perspective. The course will examine some of the ways that media intersects with political and social struggle that shapes everyday life. Furthermore we will explore how media provides forms for ideological domination and helps reproduce forms of power and at the same time provides material for the construction of identities and for empowerment, resistance and struggle.

Introduction
On the significance of mediasociology
The Dialectic of the Enlightment. Media as environments-Medium Theory
The transformation of the public sphere.
Bordieu media and field theory
Media and a theory about propaganda.
Media as bearer of the “male gaze”.
Media Post-modernism and the shaping of identity.

Complete syllabus will be handed out during the first lecture.

Requirement readings/syllabus will be distributed during the first session.
Compendium can be purchased at the Akademisk Boghandel, CSS, Øster Farimagsgade 5, building 7, at the beginning of the semester.

Small paper:
Assesment: Evaluated pass/fail
Examiner: Internal examiner.
Group/individual: The small paper may be written individual or by a group (max 4 persons)
Size: Maximun 8 pages of 2400 characters each page. If written by a group, the small paper may be 4 pages of 2400 each page longer per additional student
Attention: When handing in as a group, the contribution of each student must be pointed out

For students who need evaluation according to the 7-points-scale

• Free written take-home essay with petitum

Assesment: The exams are marked according to the 7-points- scale
Examiner: Internal examiner.
Group/individual: The Free written take-home essay may be written individually or by group (max 4 persons)
Size: An Free written take-home essay of maximun 15 pages of 2400 characters each page. If written by a group, the Free written take-home eaasy may be 7½ pages of 2400 characters each page longer per additional student
Attention: When handing in as a group, the contribution of each student must be pointed out
