Indhold: |
This course examines a representative selection of Shakespearean comedies. We shall be focusing on Shakespeare’s particular treatment of gender, and its relationship to the conventions of Elizabethan theatre. The themes of courtship and male versus female rights in the plays will be explored. We shall also be considering Shakespeare’s pioneering use of metatheatre (even more central in his comedies than in Hamlet), and the way he tests the limits of Comedy. We will pair our readings of the plays with attentiveness to the prominent status of Shakespearean comedy in musicals and opera from Falstaff to Kiss Me, Kate. There will also be a presentation on the music in Shakespeare’s plays.
