The course takes its point of departure from the discussion of an alleged Clash of Civllizations emerging in the last quarter of the 20 Century and the global development after the turn of the Millenium. The period has been designated as Late or Post Modernity and coincides with the development of a globalized media development and deep, partly unforeseen changes in world politics. Distinguishing causes from effects is a particular challenge of this development. Conflicting political and economical theories have contributed to sort of a paradigm shift in the view of a global development that has been described with words like ”End of History” and ”Post Secularism”. Irrestistable facts are the crisis of secular ideologies, the return of religion into national and global politics, the strengthening of extremist nationalism, the development of new patterns of globalized communication, and radical changes in the field of social media. The challenge is to distinguish causes from effects and clarify the trends of future development, including the interdependence of global politics, media genres and aesthetics, religious and secular movements, and personal and ethnic identities. |
