Indhold: The depiction of Arabs and Muslims in film and media is most of the time closer to caricature than to reality. It tends to homogenise a very diverse and huge group of people to accentuate what S. Huntington has called “the clash of civilizations”.
The main objective of this course is to thoroughly examine the representation of Arabs and Muslims in Western films and to give an introduction to a body of films made in Muslim-majority countries. Films produced in Hollywood and Europe depicting Arabs and Muslims will be reviewed and analysed. The production of the Middle East and North Africa will constitute also an important part of the course.
Theories relating to representation and stereotyping, multiculturalism, post colonialism and integration will be included and discussed in class. Students are expected to participate actively and make presentations.
