Indhold: Nomadism is an umbrella term for diverse lifeways which can only be understood within the context of continuous interaction with various forms of sedentary lifestyle. Much of Central Asian history can be viewed in terms of encounters between sedentary agricultural societies and the horse-riding nomads of the steppe. The relationship between the steppe and the sown has often been summarized as an oscillation between trade and raid or as an inevitable symbiosis; it has developed distinct styles of representation.
Throughout the course the concept of nomadic pastoralism will be problematized and deconstructed; Central Asian nomadism will be situated within the wider Eurasian context, ecologically, sociologically and politically; the changing significance of nomadic pastoralism in pre-modern and modern times will be investigated.
Litteratur: A master copy with all the texts will be made available on a semester shelf in the library.
