In this course, we will examine the perceptual, emotional, and cognitive dimensions of audiovisual communication (in different media such as film and television, and documentary).
We are going to discuss how visual aesthetics, narration, agency, simulation, and empathy are dependent on the viewer’s psychological and biological make-up, and what role non-verbal and interpersonal communication play in the process. There will be an emphasis on the evolutionary origins of biological dispositions and on how biology interacts with cultural and social constraints. Finally, we will look at the types of pleasure viewers can obtain from engagement with various film and television genres.
In addition to the lectures, there will be a number of practice sessions (6 x 2 hours). Here the focus will be on how to generate and develop ideas from the available literature that could make interesting exam topics. |
