Indhold: The course covers two central areas in media and communication science: Communication theory and empirical methodologies.

The first part of the course aims at providing students with an overview of major themes and developments in communication theory. The topic is approached via discussions of seminal texts, and put in perspective using historical and contemporary examples of media practices.

The second part of the course introduces the six methodological approaches most frequently applied in communication and media studies (survey research, observation studies, in-depth interviews, content analysis, controlled experiments and discourse analysis). The theoretical issues regarding methodologies are covered in six lectures, and the practical and analytical process is covered in six practically oriented sessions.

The theoretical dimension of the course (methodology and communication theory) take the form of lectures with in-class discussion. Students are encouraged to contribute ideas, examples and topics for discussion. The practical part of the methodology section will require students to prepare sample analysis of materials made available by the teacher, as well as active participation in discussions during the workshops.
Tilmelding: Please be advised that the programme has a set capacity and is, at the outset, reserved for degree students. For further questions contact: Programme secretary Jens Borglind: jborg@hum.ku.dk
