Indhold: This is a Tilvalg- and Kandidat-level course for students interested in fieldwork in the humanities, including language-based projects. Course readings are both theoretical and practical in nature, and ample time will be given to discussing the practical aspects of research. Many students come with a research project in mind and will be able to work towards refining the methodological aspects of that project—others may not yet have a specific project in mind and therefore will devise one or more hypothetical projects for the assignments. In either case, active participation in class activities by the students is fundamental to the structure of the course. Students who are preparing to do fieldwork for their BA Project may seek permission from the instructor to attend the course. At the first class we will decide whether to meet each week for 2 hours or fewer weeks for 3-hour sessions. The class will be taught in English; however, all written work may be submitted in English, Danish or in one of the Romance languages. Sample assignments include: Choosing an appropriate topic and methodology Practicing observation, interview and questionnaire techniques Practicing the writing of fieldnotes and the transcription (not phonetic!) of oral data Preparing research proposal, with budget and relevant bibliography Other topics include: Ethical, methodological and theoretical concerns of various types of projects (including discussion of qualitative vs. quantitative approaches) Special difficulties of doing fieldwork abroad (and in a foreign language) Expected Learning Outcomes – The student will: have collected samples of naturally-occurring speech and interview data understand some of the problems involved in recording speech interactions have learned through experience to critique methods and assumptions of data collection, which will add to the understanding of other people’s work be acquainted with some of the ethical issues involved in human-subjects research have an understanding of how qualitative and quantitative techniques can be incorporated into a single project have begun to work with the transcription and (preliminary) analysis of speech data be familiar with important literature/case studies on methodology have experience presenting and discussing research orally in class Evaluation of the course The evaluation of the course is handled differently according to the student’s registration (tilvalg, Portuguese KA or “Fælles” KA). This will be explained at the first class.
