Indhold: The course provides an introduction into the history of this vast region stretching from West China to Eastern Europe from the perspective of the testimonies left by the numerous visitors who travelled along the famous caravan routes of Central Asia. These included pilgrims, missionaries, scholars, explorers, diplomats, merchants, political refugees and prisoners of war as well as adventurers who travelled along the Silk Roads between the 8th and the 20th centuries. Through reading original sources such as diaries, travelogues, mission reports in English translation as well as scholarly works based on these, students will gain an insight into methods of historical knowledge production based on the use of both primary and secondary sources, into diverse modes of representing the self and the Other and into the creative potential of cultural encounters.
Litteratur: The course readings will be made available in the library on the 4th floor in Leifsgade 33
