Semesterangivelse: Efterårs kursus Kurset udbydes i blok 1 Kurset udbydes i skemagruppe A Kurset giver 7,5 ETCS point

Udgave: Efterår 2012 NAT
Point: 7,5
Blokstruktur: 1. blok
Skemagruppe: A
Fagområde: geol
Varighed: 7 uger
Institutter: Statens Naturhistoriske Museum
Studieordning: 2012-studieordningen
Uddannelsesdel: Bachelor niveau, Kandidat niveau
Kontaktpersoner: James Connelly, email:connelly@snm.ku.dk, mobile: 28 51 99 62
Undervisnings- periode: Uge 36-44
Undervisnings- form: Two weekly three-hour lecture/tutorial/discussions with additional practical sessions as necessary. Formal lectures will be combined with practical exercises that will be worked on during tutorial segments in the regular meeting times and in practical sessions. Tutorials will also include discussion of assigned papers from peer-reviewed literature. Throughout the course, students will work on a literature review paper on a topic of their choice that will result in a paper submitted at the end of the course.
Indhold: Radiogenic isotopes, geochronology, isotope tracers, planetary reservoirs, meteorites, earth, igneous and metamorphic processes, solid earth geochemistry
Kompetence- beskrivelse: The course will provide students with the theoretical and practical knowledge about radiogenic isotopes and their practical use in terrestrial and planetary geology, including early solar system evolution. Topics will range from using radiogenic isotopes as a geochronological tool to their use as isotope tracers to understand planetary-scale differentiation and evolution of large scale geochemical reservoirs. This will be achieved through formal lectures, discussion and practical exercises.
Målbeskrivelse: Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
• Explain the origin of the elements
• Explain the first-order principles of radiogenic isotopes
• Explain the basics of data acquisition, mass spectrometry and analytical uncertainties
• Describe the different radiogenic systems and their use in earth and planetary geology
• Manipulate and reduce isotope data
• Calculate ages from raw isotope data
• Recognize the potential use of radiogenic isotopes to address questions in earth and planetary geology
• Design scientific projects that use radiogenic isotopes
Tilmelding: Via KUnet from May 15 to June 1.
Faglige forudsætninger: Knowledge of basic concepts of geology is recommended.
Eksamensform: Oral examination worth 50% of the total grade. Written report worth 50% of the final grade. Form of assessment: The examination is graded according to the 7-point grading scale. Grading: Internal examiner. Scope: The examination takes 30 minutes, inclusive grading. Make-up exam: As ordinary exam.
