Indhold: The main purpose of this course is to provide students with an understanding of the key processes and dynamics associated with different forms of mobility in African contexts. The experiences and effects of forced and voluntary movement are shaping the daily lives of millions of Africans, as well as affecting and being affected by broader social, economic and political processes.

This course addresses in particular migration and displacement within the African continent (while recognising the significance of African diasporas elsewhere). Both concepts have a long history within African studies, but also within the world of international development agencies and policy makers. Within African studies, one of the earlier areas of scholarly focus was on colonial-era labour migration patterns especially in southern Africa. Another key focus has been on patterns of movement and migration in relation to post-independence rural-urban migration with subsequent attention to international / transnational migration. Increasingly there has been an interest in forced migration, or displacement, due to civil war and political conflict.

The changing dynamics and scope of movement in Africa have also generated increasing concern and interest amongst international development agencies. The link between migration and development has been highlighted (the ‘migration-development nexus’) as a potential for social and economic development, while the link between migration and security (the ‘migration-security’ nexus) has received attention merely for the risk that mass displacement of people plays in terms of the political stability of certain African regions (the Great Lakes, the Horn of Africa).

This course offers an introduction to the basic concepts, issues and histories of displacement, migration and mobility in African societies. The course presents and discusses overall conceptual approaches and analyses current issues (such as transnational migration, refugees and conflict, as well as the link between environmental change and mobility) through a number of case studies and other relevant material.

The objective of the course is to enable students to gain an analytical understanding of the broad field of migration and displacement in Africa, to apply relevant concepts and analytical frameworks and to develop a critical understanding of both academic literature and policy arenas.
