Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have come to play a critical role in Near Eastern research, as an increasing number of scholars focus on landscape archaeology. The scope for analysis beyond the site level has led to some of the most remarkable and complex archaeological studies of the 21st century. Furthermore, the accessible corpus of detailed satellite imagery, open-source software and web-based applications is growing exponentially on a yearly basis, and thus there is vast and exciting potential for discovering new ways to interrogate and present archaeological data. The aim of this course is to introduce students to the theory and practice of using GIS as an analytical tool for approaching the study of Near Eastern landscapes. Lectures will draw on a range of examples from recent archaeological studies from the Near East, Iran and Central Asia over a variety of periods. By the end of the course all students will be familiar with one of the major software programmes used in archaeological research – ESRI ArcGIS 10, and its capabilities for archaeological analysis. Course participants will also learn about a number of alternative GIS software packages, and and gain an understanding of broader theoretical themes in landscape analysis. |
