Samlet oversigt over tid og sted for alle kurser inden for Lektionsplan for Det Naturvidenskabelige Fakultet Forår 2013 NAT
Undervisnings- periode: Uge 17-25
Undervisnings- form: The course runs for 9 weeks with 3-5 lectures and 4-6 mandatory seminars weekly. At the seminars, research and review papers are presented and discussed by groups of students and the teachers. Individual and group take-home exercises are part of the syllabus The detailed teaching procedures for each week can be found in the compendium. For most weeks, there will be a guest lecture from other research institutions who will present a research topic. These presentations will be followed by a discussion of the topic based on additional reading material. These sequences are also mandatory.
Formål: The aim of the course is to provide students with an understanding of:
  • 1) Abiotic and biotic growth conditions in the Arctic
  • 2) Adaptations of animals and plants
  • 3) Diversity at all levels
  • 4) Biological interactions in time and space in arctic
Indhold: Lectures run throughout the course and present both aquatic and terrestrial themes, where the environmental characteristics of the Arctic is defined and described. In connection with this, diversity, population dynamics in time and space as well as ecological implications are covered. Morphological, physiological as well as reproductive adaptations and strategies are discussed for selected plant and animal groups. Important aspects such as effects of climate change, effects of ice and immigration after the glaciations are examined in details.
Kompetence- beskrivelse: By completing the course the students can:
  • Explain the special conditions for plants and animals in the marine, freshwater and terrestrial environments in the Arctic such as the physical and chemical situation, low temperatures, occurrence of ice, and nutrient and light availability.
  • Describe the dynamics and the production of terrestrial and aquatic Arctic ecosystems.
  • Explain the morphological, physiological and reproductive adaptations of animals and plants in relation to the arctic conditions, especially adaptations to low temperatures, short growing period and stochastic events.
  • Describe the diversity of Arctic organisms at the community, individual and genetic level in relation to the Arctic conditions.
  • Explain the background for the vulnerability of arctic species.
  • Explain the interactions among organisms in the arctic communities.
  • Describe the life history strategies in arctic animal and plant species.
  • Explain the main features of arctic species immigration after the last glaciations.
  • Evaluate the effects of climate change on arctic ecosystems and possible feed back mechanisms to the climate.
  • Critically discuss articles about arctic conditions.
  • Mediate the content of scientific articles orally and in writing.
Lærebøger: Text book: Thomas et al., The Biology of Polar Regions.
Compendium: Arctic Biology 2013.
The syllabus is approximately 600 pages in total. Both the text book and the compendium will be available approximately two weeks before course start at the bookstore in the Biocenter (http://www.biocenter.ku.dk/bogladen/).
Tilmelding: Registration in the period 15 November - 1 December via KUnet.
Eksamensform: Active participation in at least 80% of the seminars is a mandatory requirement for participation in the exam. The exam consists of a written part and an oral part. Towards the end of the course each student receives a subject (a title) for a 5 page essay (i.e., the written exam). The subjects cannot be swapped among students. The essays are written individually and must be handed in through Absalon within 2 weeks (on a fixed date; details are given during the course). The oral part of the exam consists of a presentation (10 min) of a subject different from the subject for the essay. The presentation is followed by questions (approximately 15 min) on the subject as well as the curriculum as a whole. The title for this part is handed out the same day that the essay is submitted. The last week of the course is used for preparation of the individual oral presentation of this subject. The final grade (on the 7-scale) for the course is based on the written and the oral exam and these contribute equally to the grade. Internal censorship.
Reexam: The same as for ordinary exam.
Eksamen: Essayaflevering d. 14. juni 2013 og mundtlig prøve d. 20-21. juni 2013.
Reeksamen: Essayaflevering d. 19. august 2013 og mundtlig prøve d. 23. august 2013.
