From Analogue to Digital. The second generation of the Media Artists

Indhold: The introductory survey course is designed as continuation of the course Historical Origins of Media Art (Spring 2012) which however is not regarded as a necessary prerequisite: Both courses offer independently an insight into the important aspects of the Histories and Theories of Media Art and their impacts on the Visual Culture and related studies today. The focus will be laid on introducing the important representatives of the second generation of the media artists, which have contributed considerably between the end of the 80s and the beginning of the 90s towards helping media art to gain acceptance internationally. They deliver a splendid example of the continual cross-media development of film and video, gradually including the digital forms of expression ‘from scratch’. Through their independent development of hardware and software components in connection with both visual- and ‘biofeedback‘-interfaces, these artists and groups have succeeded with their solutions both for galleries and public space in getting the advantages and inherent features of real-time, feedback-capable analogue and digital media to interpenetrate. The transition from analogue “video art” to digital “media art” was thus completed, and together with this the “wave of interaction” in the media art of the 90s had been ushered in. Considered will be the following artists born between 1952-1962: David Rokeby, Toshio Iwai, Masaki Fujihata, Bill Spinhoven, Jim Campbell, Ken Feingold, Perry Hoberman, Julia Scher, Simon Penny, Horst Prehn, Christian Moeller, ‘Asymptote’, and ‘ART+COM’. The goal of the course is to provide students with methodological skills for recognizing theoretical, technical and historical relevance of the related agents and issues, especially in continually transgressing their implicit or explicit curricular limits within the context of the Art History and Visual Culture.
