This course examines paintings by Giorgione, Titian, Veronese, Tintoretto, and others, intended for diverse settings, such as churches, domestic interiors, scuole and the Doge’s palace. We will suggest possible meanings of religious and secular paintings, especially of landscapes, female nudes, portraits, historical events and mythological scenes, by analyzing them from a variety of methodological perspectives. Venetian color and the influence of forms and ideas from antiquity, Florence, Byzantium and the East, will also be discussed. Course Textbook: To be announced.
