No longer limited to individuals or specific groups, migration has become a mass phenomenon in the 20th and 21st centuries, not least in Europe which is currently undergoing complex linguistical, cultural, religious, and ethnic changes due, to a large extent, to immigration. The course will look into how these cultural and demographic changes are reflected in contemporary European cinema, especially, but not exclusively, in films made by European directors with migrant background, and it will discuss how these films deal with identity issues related to migration (e.g., so-called hybrid, mixed, diasporic, or ’inbetween’ identities).
Based on case studies from the UK (Gurinder Chadha), France (Rachid Bouchareb), Germany (Fatih Akin), and Denmark (Omar Shargawi), we will investigate different kinds of ’migrant’ or ’post-migrant’ cinema and their various cultural and historical contexts, just as we will discuss whether it is possible – and/or productive – to speak of a certain kind of ’migratory aesthetics’ (Mieke Bal) or ’accented cinema’ (Hamid Naficy).
The course participants are expected to take an active part in these discussions.
