Indhold: This course will introduce students to current debates in philosophy of mind and cognitive science over the extent to which cognitive processes depend upon features of an agent’s physical body and surrounding environment. Recently, many theorists have argued that different forms of cognitive activity routinely exploit structures in both the extra-neural body as well as the natural and social world. Some have even argued that, in virtue of its embodied and embedded nature, the boundaries of cognition extend beyond the limits of the skin and skull. This course will investigate the strength and scope of these claims; we will also consider their philosophical, methodological, and empirical consequences. The course material will consist of both philosophical and empirical literature.

Questions to be considered include: In what ways does an embodied and embedded approach to cognition challenge traditional approaches to mind in cognitive science? What is the relationship between movement, thought, and experience? Does the mind extended beyond the head? Is language embodied? What about empathy and our knowledge of others? What is an embodied and embedded approach to emotion? How does having a body shape my experience of selfhood?
Litteratur: There are two main texts:

Gallagher, S. (2005). How the Body Shapes the Mind. Oxford University Press.

Shapiro, L. (2011). Embodied Cognition. Routledge.

Additional readings will be provided.
Tilmelding: The course is available for degree students as well as students on other MA-programmes as an MA-elective course. We are still accepting MA-elective applications. For further questions contact: Programme secretary Jens Borglind: jborg@hum.ku.dk
