Indhold: For more than 40 years of the 20th Century, from the late 1940s to around 1990, two conflicting superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, dominated world politics and wielded considerable opposite ideological influence on socio-economic systems in most countries of the world. At the height of this Cold War, the two powers and their respective alliances in Europe amassed more than 60,000 nuclear bombs – more than enough to annihilate human civilization. The global systemic and ideological Cold War conflict has cast its long shadows even into world politics of the 21st Century. On the basis of differing interpretations in recent and advanced international historical scholarship and recently declassified Cold War archives, this course will address questions such as these: What was the historical background of this epic international conflict? Which motivating questions of ideology, identity, economics, political culture and strategic thought were behind the Cold War? How did the conflict unfold, how can it be periodized, and what was the specific role of Europe, including its smaller nations, and the Third World in various phases of the Cold War conflict? What was the relationship between key decisions makers and public opinion, and what was the role of propaganda in East and West? And, not least, which factors account for the fact that the conflict ended in such a surprisingly peaceful and abrupt way?

Course objectives (beside the objectives stipulated in the curriculum):
• to be able to account sophisticatedly for key positions in recent U.S. and European historical research on the origins, unfolding and end of the Cold War conflict
• to be able to apply pertinent theoretical approaches, including key elements of International Relations theory, on various empirical aspects of the Cold War conflict
• to be able to convincingly use and interpret relevant primary sources in the context of specific historical problems of the global Cold War
