| Indhold: |
Mesopotamian literature is one of the world’s oldest literatures. The earliest literary texts date as far back as 2600 BC and are still only poorly understood, and the last literary texts are attested until the end of cuneiform culture around the beginning of the Common Era. In Mesopotamia, the concepts of myth and literature are closely linked, because the earliest mythologies have survived only in written, poetic form.
The literatures and mythology of ancient Mesopotamia offer a fascinating insight into the thoughts of ancient peoples and show how they coped with questions that are still relevant today: mortality and immortality, order and chaos, the unpredictability of the future, good or bad luck.
Key questions that will appear throughout this course will be 1) how do we define the literary? 2) What was the relationship between literature and history? Can literature be used as a primary source in reconstructing Mesopotamian history? 3) Is there such a thing as ‘Mesopotamian literature’?
We will read Akkadian and Sumerian literary and mythological texts only in translations, no prior knowledge of the languages is required, although some basic knowledge of Mesopotamian history is desirable. |
