In cognitive psychology, the research area of “mindreading” concerns our ordinary ability to generate beliefs about the mental states on others. Much folk psychology consists in predicting behavior on the basis of what we believe about other people’s beliefs and desires. The course begins with a brief introduction to this field. We will consider studies in developmental and cognitive psychology as well as in comparative psychology (espc. primatology).
Much of the empirical research on mindreading concerns ascriptions of belief and desire. In contrast, our ability to ascribe knowledge is not as intensely studied. This is unfortunate insofar as the concept of knowledge plays very important role in our cognitive and social lives. Consequently, we will focus on some intriguing variations of knowledge ascriptions that figure prominently in contemporary epistemology.
The material will be relevant to students interested in psychology, philosophy of mind and epistemology. The course will be research-based. Hence, readings will include read work-in-progress.
