Undervisnings- form: 26 lectures Lecture Content Basic-to-cutting edge concepts on the pathophysiology of major diseases will be covered by experts in the field with a focus on integrative molecular pathophysiology. The lecture content will take its basis in basic knowledge covered in the course text and unfold new and prospective avenues of basic science and clinical research that elucidate the pathophysiology of common disease. Topics: 1. Introduction to the course - cellular pathophysiology 2. Introduction to the course - integrative pathophysiology 3. Circulatory physiology and heart failure 4. Blood pressure homeostasis and hypertension 5. Respiratory physiology 6. Chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases 7. Kidney physiology and calcium homeostasis 8. Glomerular and tubular kidney diseases 9. Inflammation 10. Atherogenesis and iscaemic heart disease 11. Haematopoiesis 12. Anemias 13. Carcinogenesis 14. Metastasis 15. Liver physiology and hepatic cirrhosis 16. Acid scretion and gastric ulcer 17. Insulin secretion and action 18. Type 1 diabetes pathophysiology 19. Type 2 diabetes pathophysiology 20. Pathophysiology of late diabetic complications 21. Autoimmunity and reumatoid arthritis 22. Osteoarthritis 23. Osteoporosis 24. HIV/Acquired immunodeficiency 25. Degenerative neurological diseases 26. Information on the written exam format.
Indhold: This candidate course focuses on a theoretical approach to the study of the genetic, molecular and physiological mechanisms underlying a variety of common diseases. Focused lectures and background text-book reading will provide current knowledge and research approaches towards understanding pathways underlying altered physiological function in various disease states. In addition to reading basic text-book chapters, research-based scientific lectures will lead to the formulation of a solid knowledge foundation on current theories, disease etiology and pathophysiological manifestations. Each topical lecture will be structured to cover several levels of organization where appropriate including integration of gene signalling and cellular signaling cascades into organ and systemic physiological function. A major emphasis for the course is for students to approach the study of pathologies on the basis of ‘function’ (pathophysiology) including altered structure-function relationships and the associated regulatory processes. Students are expected to engage in independent critical reading of the assigned text. Students are encouraged to attend all lectures and participate in discussion with faculty on the topics listed in the course schema. Focused study on all course topics will prepare students for a formal written essay exam which will comprise the evaluation of the extent and depth of learning and thus the basis for their grade in the course.
Lærebøger: Robbins & Cotran: Pathologic Basis of Disease, 8th edition.
Eksamensform: 4 hours written exam. Graded according to the 7-step scale and with internal censorship.
Examination rules for the Faculty of Health Sciences
In order to be eligible for re-examination at the Faculty’s courses, you must have made an attempt at the ordinary exam. An attempt is defined as a personal appearance, where you hand in an empty exam paper/assignment, or by presenting a signed doctor’s certificate no later than 3 days after the exam. That means that it is not possible to sign up for a re-examination if you have not made an attempt at the ordinary exam.
