Undervisnings- form: Lectures, seminar discussions, small group exercises.

Formål: The course is intended – through a detailed analysis of how European integration and the European Union have been theorized – to show how theoretical speculation is a central and indispensible part of political analysis. The EU is an especially interesting object of theoretical discussion because its apparent historical novelty suggests that scholarship will have to find new sets of tools to explain and understand it. This raises a set of broad social science questions, which this course aims to consider. The course aims to explore the relationship between the development of theoretical discussion about European integration on the one hand and the institutional and policy evolution of the EU on the other.

Indhold: The course engages in detailed discussion and evaluation of the main theoretical toolkits that have been used to explain and understand European integration, European Union governance, the nature of the EU as a political system and the EU’s place in world politics. The course commences with an analysis of the place of theory in EU studies, before thinking about the nature of the EU and the meaning of ‘integration’. It then covers theories of European post-nationalism from Kant until the mind-twentieth century, classical integration theory in its neofunctionalist and intergovernmentalist guises, the EU as an object of political science theory, the EU and theories of governance, normative political theory and the EU, constructivism and European integration, critical theories of EU politics, theorising the EU’s role in world politics, the EU’s place in theories of comparative regionalism, the possibility of interdisciplinary theories of European integration and the place of EU studies within social science more broadly. The course will develop a discussion of a series of common threads that run through the weekly topics. These include the constant ‘dependent variable problem’, the need to secure analytical leverage in the context of the EU’s possible uniqueness, the notion of whether the EU can be thought of as a state, and the question of whether the EU should be located within a particular parent discipline (such as IR or political science). At each stage, theoretical contributions will be evaluated in the context of the institutional evolution of the EU and the development of European political and economic integration.

Kompetence- beskrivelse: On completion of the course, students should (a) be able to demonstrate familiarity with the main theories of European integration and EU politics; (b) be able to demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between theories of integration and the evolution of the EU and to show competence to apply theories of integration in the empirical context of the EU; (c) be able to make informed, analytical evaluations of different theories and (d) be able to relate discussions about theories of European integration and the EU to broader social scientific concerns.

Criteria of Grading:

  • Grade 12 is for students with excellent performance, and full or almost full mastery of the content of the course materials and the literature and an excellent ability to discuss theoretical topics in relation to the study of the EU.

  • Grade 7 is for students with good performance, and good understanding of the content of the course materials and literature and a good ability to discuss theoretical topics in relation to the study of the EU.

  • Grade 02 is for students with sufficient performance, and understanding of the content of the course material and literature and some ability to apply the theoretical elements of the lecture and literature in new contexts.
