Undervisnings- form: Lectures, workshops, group project, obligatory assignments, innovation camp
Formål: Commercial and public services are increasingly implemented as ‘digital services’, which are automated services that are delivered via the Internet. Online banking, media streaming, electronic tax filing, and e-health portals are just a few among many digital services that have fundamentally changed the commercial and civil services in the past decade. The aim of this course is to give students a theoretical frameworks and practical skills in developing innovative digital services. The course will emphasize critical services that have high potential for generating enduring societal impact. In particular, we will focus on the healthcare domain in which digital services play a critical role in service delivery and have critical impact on key performance indicators, and require security, reliability, integration, and presentation of information to both professional and private users.
Kompetence- beskrivelse: The course consists of a hands-on and a theoretical component that will supplement each other throughout the course. In the hands-on component, students will work on a digital service innovation project in groups. Groups are expected to be cross-disciplinary with computer science, communication, healthcare, and business competences involved. The project will be based on a real problem case defined by an external organization such as The Capital Region of Denmark. Based on the case, the group will analyze, design, prototype, and evaluate a new digital service in collaboration with stakeholders (including the external organization). The end product will be both a prototype of and a business model for an innovative digital service that will have to be presented to the external organization. In the theoretical component, workshops and lectures will give students the necessary knowledge and technique to carry out a digital service innovation project. This includes general techniques for entrepreneurship, ideation, prototyping, and business model generation as well as domain-specific knowledge about healthcare services and knowledge of communication as a means of both delivering information and supporting collaboration.
Målbeskrivelse: After completing the course, students are expected to be able to
  • Present and analyze the requirements, challenges, and opportunities of digital services
  • Design digital services in collaboration with key stakeholders
  • Build and evaluate prototypes of digital services
  • Apply domain-specific knowledge to identify possibilities of technological innovation
  • Work effectively in cross-disciplinary teams
  • Create and evaluate business models for digital services
Lærebøger: The course will have one or more obligatory books on entrepreneurship and business modeling such as:
  • Read, S., Sarasvathy, S., Dew, N., Wiltbank, R., Ohlsson, A.-V. (2011). Effectual Entrepreneurship. Routhledge
  • Osterwalder, A., Pigneur, Y. (2010). Business Model Generation. Wiley
The course books will be supplemented with scientific papers.
Tilmelding: November 15 to December 1, 2012, via KUnet, www.kunet.dk
Faglige forudsætninger: The course is designed for University of Copenhagen, Technical University of Denmark, and Copenhagen Business School students. For University of Copenhagen, it is specifically designed for students with a bachelor degree in Computer Science, Communication and IT, or IT and Health. For Technical University of Denmark, it is specifically designed for students who are enrolled in a master program in Engineering Management, Medicine and Technology, or Design and Innovation Engineering.
Eksamensform: A set of obligatory written assignments based on the group project must be approved to be eligible for the exam. For the exam, a written assignment has to be delivered followed by an oral defense. The examination will be internal and grading will be done according to the 7-grade scale. The re-exam is the same as the ordinary exam in which a new written assignment will have to be handed in
Eksamen: Rapport afleveres d. 12. juni og mundtlig prøve d. 19-20. juni 2013.
