Stone tools and their associated byproducts provide a 2 million year long behavioral record of the human occupation of the Middle East. Their development over time reflects some of the major demographic, economic and social changes in southwest Asian pre- and proto-history, until the advent of metal technologies. They provide evidence for human technological achievements, cultural interaction, economy and population dynamics. Stone tools are therefore a key material for any archaeologist working in the region to engage with.
This course provides students with an in-depth overview of southwest Asian stone tool technologies from the Lower Palaeolithic to the end of the Bronze Age, covering northeast Africa, Arabia, the Levant, Anatolia and Mesopotamia. It will introduce the diverse range of methods and theories used to study southwest Asian lithic assemblages, and will include practical elements handling and studying stone artefacts.
