Indhold: The course explores themes on liberty in contemporary political philosophy. Prominent conceptions and discussions on the concept of liberty will be surveyed and their various social, legal and economic aspects will be considered. We will examine the relationship between liberty and law, liberty and economic justice and assess philosophical arguments for familiar liberty rights. The course addresses questions such as: What is negative and positive liberty? Is there a right to liberty? Does recognition of the importance of liberty lead to a requirement of political participation? How do we justify the constraints that our laws and institutions impose on us? What is the relationship between private property and liberty? Is there a conflict between equality and liberty?

An ongoing exercise will be to relate philosophical discussions on liberty to intuition and everyday life as well as current political discussions and events.
