Undervisnings- periode: Uge 17-24
Undervisnings- form: The form of teaching is a combination of lectures, seminars and student presentations.
Indhold: Theoretical and practical aspects of change in rural livelihoods, including the relative importance of agricultural livelihoods and livelihood diversification; impacts of globalization processes on rural livelihoods, including assessment of drivers of change; assessment of vulnerability and resilience in rural communities; adaptive capacity and strategies for adaptation to socio-economic and environmental change; such as national and international policies, markets, conflicts, development assistance as well as climate change, change in soil fertility, forest cover and biodiversity. Case studies from Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Pacific will be used to illustrate the theories and assess the possibilities and constraints of case study based research.
Kompetence- beskrivelse: The aim of the course is to provide an in depth theoretical understanding of how rural livelihoods in developing countries have evolved over the past decades under global change. The vulnerability and resilience of households and communities and their associated adaptive capacity will be analyzed both from theoretical and practical empirical perspectives with the use of case studies. Global, national and local drivers of change in livelihoods and vulnerability will be discussed and linked to ongoing international debates such as economic globalisation, international crises (food, financial, etc.) and environmental change including climate change, biodiversity conservation and changes in land productivity and forest cover. At the end of the course, the students should be able to write and orally present a research proposal that 1) presents the theoretical frameworks related understanding and linking livelihoods, vulnerability and adaptation; 2) identifies a feasible research topic and presents an analytical framework for understanding the importance of various socio-economic and environmental drivers of change in livelihoods, vulnerability and adaptive capacity as well as the feed-back mechanisms of these drivers.
