Examples from geosciences that involve mathematical and numerical problems such as; differentiation/integration, functions, linear algebra, ordinary and partial differential equations, finite differences |
| Kompetence- beskrivelse: |
The course aims to; (1) enable students to translate a geoscience problem into a “mathematical problem”, (2) find the appropriate mathematical or numerical solution procedure for solving the problem, (3) develop programs/scripts that can solve the problem and testing these, (4) use the programs to study the problem. The students will work with realistic geoscience problems. Currently, Matlab is used as the program and learning how to structure a script is part of the syllabus. |
| Målbeskrivelse: |
Upon completion of the course, students should be able to
• Formulate geoscience problems in mathematical language
• Use a suite of classical mathematical and numerical methods in geoscience
• Program on an introductory level (presently in Matlab)
• Write reports where the mathematical/numerical methods are presented, tested/verified, and used to solve the problem

Written reports, internal examiner, graded according to the 7-point grading scale. Make-up exam as ordinary exam. |

Løbende evaluering.
Reeksamen: Skriftlige opgave afleveres efter aftale med underviser. |
