Undervisnings- periode: Uge 6-12 og 14
Indhold: Scientific English, Bachelor project, scientific reports, reference lists, report structure, abstracts, grammar, oral presentations, Powerpoint
Kompetence- beskrivelse:
The course participants will receive an all-round training in spoken and written English suitable for natural science B.Sc. students. The aim is to prepare students for writing their bachelor projects and potentially future M.Sc. projects. We will study basic grammar and sentence structure, and focus on common mistakes of Danish students; language and communication skills for scientific talks, both formal and popular. Talks and texts will be spread over those natural sciences represented among the attending students. Training of PC skills needed for text, tables and diagrams will be covered in detail, as well as advice on organising a B.Sc. project.
Målbeskrivelse: The aim of the course is to give the student skills in:
• understanding why natural science students need English and appreciating that it is an advanced, modern language that is effective, easy to use, has a rich vocabulary and is tolerant of change; preparing a well-structured presentation that is aimed at the correct audience, integrating the presentation with tools such as Powerpoint, establishing eye-contact with, and accepting critism from, an audience, as well as providing correct source acknowledgements for information and images;
• understanding the features of scientific English: use of numbers and symbols; active and passive verbs; use of non-personal language; avoiding use of everyday language and personified verbs, rhetoric, clichés, idioms and superfluous or imprecise phrases; recognising the important distinctions between English and Danish, word order, use of third person singular, punctuation, and words only slightly different from Danish;
• writing aimed at a certain type of reader, so that he/she can understand a text quickly and easily, improving sentences and paragraphs, and correcting and rewriting a draft text;
• understanding the general structure of a Bachelor project in comparison to other scientific reports and publications, and the differences in style between an experimenally-based project and a literature-based study
• understanding the stages of writing a Bachelor project, from definition of the preliminary goals, through recording of the experimental data, to searching and documenting relevant literature
• understanding the preparation and construction of an abstract and reference list.
