Samlet oversigt over tid og sted for alle kurser inden for Lektionsplan for Det Naturvidenskabelige Fakultet Efterår 2012 NAT
Undervisnings- form: Lectures, classes with problem solving and take-home assignments performed in small groups of 2-3 students.
Formål: The course gives the students a solid background in current organic synthetic and biologically mediated reactions, their uses and their mechanistical basis. The overall goal is to give the student the tools for picking the best practically synthetic solutions for a given problem.
Indhold: The topics are: Transition-metal catalyzed reactions including cross-coupling reactions; Stereospecific aldol-additions; Chiral auxilaries; Pericylic reactions including click-chemistry; Rearrangements; Fragmentations; Radical reactions including carbenes; Microorganisms and enzymes in synthesis; Methods for the resolution of racemic mixtures: Classical resolution, enzymatic resolution, spontaneous resolution and methods for determination of optical purity; Microfluidics in synthesis; Solid-phase supported reagents for synthesis; Case stories from the medicinal industry: What is an invention? Scalability problems.
Kompetence- beskrivelse: The student should have an overview of organic chemistry and should be able to analyze a synthetic problem and plan a feasible synthesis. The student should also be able to analyze scientific papers and patents dealing with synthetic problems and be able to spot inconsistent claims.
Målbeskrivelse: The students will get 12 take-home assignments during the course, where they are asked to analyse a case story. These assignments can be the planning of a synthesis of a molecule of interest, an analysis of a series of papers or patents dealing with the synthesis of a molecule of interest to medicinal chemistry, and part of the assignment could be to form an independent opinion on for example a specific set of claims from a patent or paper. These assignments have to be approved in order to go the final examination. The evaluation will be based on one of the written reports and on the student’s ability to defend the report with the two parts given equal weight.

Description of the requirements for passing (02), being average (7) and being excellent (12):

02: The student is able to explain the content and the results of the written report.

7: The student is able to explain the content and the results of the written report and shows an understanding of some of the underlying reaction mechanisms.

12: The student is able to explain the content and the results of the written report and shows a complete understanding of the underlying reaction mechanisms.

Faglige forudsætninger: It is highly recommended that the student have a solid background in organic chemistry. The course is compulsory for students following the specializations in “Synthesis” (MSc-programme on Chemistry) and “Medicinal Chemistry” (joint MSc-programme between NAT, FARMA and LIFE).
Formelle krav: See above
Eksamensform: There will be 12 take-home assignments during the course, which will have to be approved in order to take the exam. The exam is an oral examination based on one of the take-home assignments chosen randomly (by lot). There is an external censor and the grading follows the 7-step scale. The re-examination is also an oral examination based on one of the take-home assignments chosen randomly (by lot). There is an external censor and the grading follows the 7-step scale.
Eksamen: Mundtlig prøve den 25. januar 2013. Reeksamen: Mundtlig prøve den 19. april 2013.
