| Indhold: |
The course falls in two parts, in block 1 and 2 respectively. The first part concerns classical and contemporary theoretical approaches to development geography inspired by modernization theory, dependency theory, and post-development theory, including debates on participatory development gender, and development ethics. The course introduces, contextualizes and updates classical texts in combination with the most recent texts. The second part concerns approaches to the study of human-environment interactions, including contributions from environmental/ecological geography, human and political ecology, ecological economics and sustainability and land system science. Examples from current research will be used to demonstrate the utility and limitations of these fields of study. |
| Kompetence- beskrivelse: |
The aim of the course is to give the students an understanding of current trends in studies of development geography and human-environment interactions by providing an overview of classical and contemporary theoretical approaches. The course will stimulate critical reflection on geography’s role vis-a-vis new inter- and trans-disciplinary fields and on how contemporary concerns for globalization and local development impact on theory building. |
| Målbeskrivelse: |
Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:
• understand the historical transformation of concepts and lines of thoughts
• present an overview of major strands and positions
• give professional critique of geographers and others working on these topics, using the appropriate language(s) and terminology
• employ concepts and line of thoughts on new material
• critically assess the usefulness of different approaches to the study of socio-natural systems.

Examination form: Oral examination (written report and curriculum) without preparation time
Form of assessment: The examination is graded according to the 7-point grading scale.

The report must be submitted on the 15th of January 2013 at 11am in three copies in room 04.1.411 and the oral examination is between the 22th-25th of January 2013.Re-examination: Report must be submitted on the 15th of April and oral examination is on the 18th of April 2013. |
