| Formål: |
Provide the basic skills for performing data capture and modeling in order to understand and quantify groundwater flow and transport in a small Danish catchment (beneath the Pleistocene Karup sandur). |
| Indhold: |
The course will integrate disciplines such as Quarternary geology, hydrogeophysics, hydrochemistry/isotopes and hydrogeology. Focus is on illustrating the worth of different sources of data. Fundamentals of groundwater flow and introduction to transport theory. Geological and hydrogeological modeling using advanced software. Hydrogeophysical measurements of key features in catchment. Use of hydrochemical and isotopic tracers to identify sources of water and assign apparent groundwater ages. Groundwater pollution from agricultural contaminants. |
| Kompetence- beskrivelse: |
The course will provide a theoretical overview of the various fluxes of the hydrological cycle and how they can be measured estimated by models of different complexity. The issue of scale will be discussed. Hydrological modelling and water balance assessment at catchment scale will be carried out. Modelling activities will integrate several disciplines including hydrology, Quatertary geology, hydrogeophysics, contaminant hydrology, hydrochemistry/isotopes and hydrogeology. Historical data as well as new data collected as part of on-going research project will be used. Future climate projections may also be used. Supplementary field data collection will be carried out as required. State-of-the-art hydrological and hydrogeological modelling software will be used throughtout the course. The course will emphasize integration of data and modelling and the use of interdisciplinary approaches. The exercises will be based on real-world cases and include data capture, modelling, and analysis. Exercises are completed in groups. |
| Målbeskrivelse: |
Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:
read and comprehend international literature on water resources and related supporting disciplines;
collect and critically evaluate existing and new interdisciplinary data on hydrology, geology, geophysics, hydrogeology and geochemistry;
calibrate and apply hydrological models for various hydrological fluxes (e.g. unsaturated flow, groundwater flow, flow interaction between groundwater and surface water) to solve flow and transport problems;
analyze the impact of the geological settings on subsurface flow and transport;
analyze and assess hydrology, water balance and water resources at catchment scale;
write a report over water resources problems and present findings. |
