Samlet oversigt over tid og sted for alle kurser inden for Lektionsplan for Det Naturvidenskabelige Fakultet Efterår 2012 NAT
Undervisnings- periode: Week 36-44 and week 47-51 and 1-3
Undervisnings- form: The form of teaching and work will be class teaching with active participation of students by means of student presentations, group-work etc. Optionally students may participate in laboratory and or field work associated with the teachers' active research projects.
Indhold: The aim of the course is to provide an overview of past climate and sea-level changes focused on how these changes are observed in the sedimentary records; what processes, interactions and feedback between the components of the climate system may have led to the signal in the sedimentary archives. The course is composed of theory and case-studies. The theory part comprises an introduction to climate archives and marine and terrestrial system processes. Important sedimentary and geochemical proxies including isotopes are covered and students are trained in critical reading of key literature. Cases may deal with past climate change, landscape change, long term carbon cycle and seawater geochemical changes and on time scales ranging from millions to millennial years. Data collected during laboratory and/or field work are analysed and critically evaluated.
At the end of blok 1 the students will work on a literature based project. Alternatively the students have the option to participate in and write a report about field work and or laboratory work associated with the teachers active research projects. For the latter option the students should anticipate to pay for travel to the field destination and food. Content and structure of the course may vary from year to year as does field locations; Jylland, Alps, Spain or Utah. Contact kontaktperson for information.
Kompetence- beskrivelse: The aim of the course is to provide an overview of past climate and sea-level changes focused on how these changes are observed in the sedimentary records; what processes, interactions and feedback between the components of the climate system may have led to the signal in the sedimentary archives. The course is composed of theory and case-studies. The theory part comprises an introduction to climate archives and marine and terrestrial system processes. Important sedimentary and geochemical proxies including isotopes are explained and students are trained in the evaluation of data. Cases may deal with past climate change, landscape change, long term carbon cycle and seawater geochemical change and on time scales ranging from millions to millennial years. Data collected during field work or obtained from laboratory work are analysed and critically evaluated. At the end of block 1 students read key papers and produce a review report or write a report about field/laboratory work. At the end of block 2 the student should have the necessary background for understanding the importance of observations and hypothesis testing. The student may have developed skills in: analysing of multiple dataset and interpretation of which processes feedback lead to the observations; evaluating the validity of geological data archives and model results through comparative studies. The student should be able to make a professional-style oral presentation and back it up with a short, concise report.
Målbeskrivelse: Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:
  • read scientific literature on climate systems and geological climate archives;
  • use relevant definitions and terms;
  • analyse and interpret data from geological climate archives;
  • interpret geological climate signals;
  • place interpretation of climate archive or climate system in a wider perspective;
  • give professional-style oral presentation;
  • write a concise report.
  • Tilmelding: Via Selvbetjeningen på KUnet mellem den 15. maj og 1. juni.
    Eksamensform: Oral examination (written report and curriculum) without preparation time. Form of assessment: The examination is graded according to the 7-point grading scale. Grading: external examiner appointed by the University. Scope: The examination takes 30 minutes, inclusive grading. make-up exam: As ordinary exam.
    Eksamen: The report must be submitted on the 15th of January 2013 at 11am in three copies in room 04.1.411 and the oral examination is between the 23th-25th of January 2013.
    Reexam: The report must be submitted on the 15th of April 2013 at 11am in three copies in room 04.1.411 and the oral examination is on the 18th of April 2013.
