Undervisnings- form: Lectures, discussions, computer modelling (mostly with the speciation code, PHREEQ), exercises and lab experiments
Indhold: Behaviour of ions in natural systems; concept of dynamic equilibrium; structure of water, acids/bases, alkalinity; hydration, coordination chemistry, kinetics of geochemical reactions; soil minerals, structure, composition; carbon system, CO2, carbonate equilibria; precipitation/dissolution; formation of solid solution; adsorption/desorption, electrical double layer theory; rock weathering, soil, groundwater, organic substances, trace element behaviour.
Målbeskrivelse:
At the end of the course, the student should:
  • understand the basic processes that control the composition and structure of the surfaces of natural materials
  • use known thermodynamic and kinetic relationships to describe geochemical systems and know how these relationships were developed
  • use newly developed skills in critical thinking, problem solving, calculation, interpretation of results and construction of several types of geochemical diagrams, both by hand calculation and with a geochemical speciation program (such as PHREEQ).
  • have confidence in quantitative concepts, be able to make the assumptions necessary to work with natural systems; determine probable outcome; understand the relative uncertainty introduced by these assumptions.

    Tilmelding: Via KUnet in the period May 15th - June 1st
    Faglige forudsætninger: Good basis in chemistry or geochemistry
    Eksamensform: Løbende evaluering bestående af øvelser og prøver. Bedømmelse med karakter efter 7-skalaen. Intern censur. Reeksamen: 4 timers skriftlig eksamen, med karakter efter 7-skalaen; intern censur (adgang til reeksamen forudsætter at alle øvelser er blevet godkendt)
    Eksamen: Løbende evaluering. Reeksamen: Skriftlig prøve den 17. april 2013.
