Description:

In the Hebrew Bible, we find the basis for the ritual systems and dietary laws that are still in use today in Judaism and Islam – and to a lesser extent in Christianity. These laws include regulations for butchering methods and rules regarding clean and unclean animals and circumcision.

Ritual markers, such as dietary practices and purity laws, contribute to identity formation and delineation by creating visible and tangible criteria for inclusion into the community.

The course will include readings of key Hebrew Bible texts relating to ritual purity and impurity, dietary laws, the significance of blood, and circumcision, as well as an introduction to ritual studies, the role of ritual in society and ritual in the Hebrew Bible. Finally, the course will focus on ritual and conflict by including ancient accounts of hostilities caused by ritual demarcation. These latter texts will be read in an English translation.
