Indhold: In this course, students will be introduced to the system of traditional Sanskrit grammar based on the 'Laghu Siddhanta-Kaumudi'. Varadaraja, who compiled the 'Laghu Siddhanta-Kaumudi’, was a disciple of Bhattoji Dikshita (1570-1650 A.D), the author of Siddhanata-Kaumudi (a commentary on Ashtadhyayi of Panini). In the 'Laghu Siddhanta-Kaumudi', Varadaraja has tried to analyze the Sanskrit grammar with help of 1272 rules out of 4000 rules of Panini. The arrangement of the 'Laghu Siddhanta-Kaumudi' is really user friendly because Varadaraja has arranged it as per the requirement of beginners excluding the traditional discussion of Sutras.
Methodology: Sutra
Split the Sutra
Recognize the case-endings
Commentary of Sutra
Example with derivation process
Explanation
The course will require students to be prepared for each class with a textual segment of the ‘Laghu Siddhanta Kaumudi, and with a basic familiarity of terms and concepts. In addition, there will be some memorization of the text involved – each class will offer opportunities to recite fragments of the texts and to commit them to memory by means of simple exercises. It teaches the traditional grammatical terminology, Panini's sutra style of describing the language, traditional etymology and practical application of sutras in the process of Sanskrit word derivation. Upon completion of this course students will know basic traditional Sanskrit grammatical terms. They will be able to recognize and understand most of the common grammatical features of the Sanskrit language from the point of view of Paninian grammar, and make basic analysis of a Sanskrit word derivation process through sutras. At the end of the course students will have a general common idea of Paninian grammar and will be able to approach academic discussions of traditional Paninian linguistics and semantics.
