This course is designed from Masters’ students as well as for undergraduate students on the final years of studies. Identity is a theme central to humanities and social sciences and over the last decades, it has acquired a great deal of scientific interest to interpret a range of social issues and phenomena related to the era sociologists describe as late, post, liquid or reflexive modernity, and to the social transformations brought by what Manuel Castells describes as ‘the network society’. The course aims at critically discussing the concept of identity from an interdisciplinary theoretical perspective, focusing on identity and media uses and experience. Sociological concerns related to the construction of the self and the other, the mediation of difference, the question of voice, exclusion and representation, the processes characterizing globalization, or the phenomena related to consumer culture such as social fragmentation, as well as the relation of identity to citizenship and politics, will be unfolded by the course.
