Indhold: Module I-VI, KA, course 10:
Lars Hovbakke Sørensen: The Nordic Model 1800-2011

During the last 200 years many Scandinavians have perceived the so-called Nordic political culture, social structure and mentality as fundamentally different from that of the rest of Europe. An indication of this attitude is the use of the concept Norden instead of Northern Europe when talking of these countries. Norden has been perceived as something not European, not Catholic, anti-Rome, Anti-imperialist, non-colonial, non-exploitative, peaceful, small and social democratic.

The purpose of the seminar is to investigate the myth as well as the reality of Norden during the 19th and the 20th Century. Special attention will be paid to the political initiatives to develop inter-Nordic cooperation during the 20th Century and to Scandinavian politicians’ use of the myth of Norden in their efforts to develop political and economic cooperation between the Nordic countries.

Another central question to be discussed will be, whether talk about a special em>Nordic Model of democracy, of political system, of political culture and of welfare state, different from that of the rest of Western Europe, has anything to it.

Further the role of the nation and of nationalism in the political debates in the Nordic countries during the 19th and the 20th Century will be investigated. Special attention will be paid to the interplay between the role of the nation and of nationalism in the Nordic countries on the one hand and the Nordic politicians’ approach to the European and international integration since 1945 on the other.
